GameBabble – Dreamcast Day 2012

September 10, 2012

Happy Dreamcast Day everybody!

New Releases – September 2012

September 9, 2012

I hope you like fighters ‘cuz we got both Tekken Tag 2 and DOA5 coming this month along with…other…things. The point is we got releases as the industry begins revving its gaming engines once again for the Christmas Release Rush!

Double Dragon Neon (XBLA, PSN)

Questionable aesthetic choices and clunky animation aside, I am very interested in WayForward’s take on Double Dragon. I know most previews claim it’s incredibly basic and brings nothing new to the table, but the Mix Tape system promises new moves and stat boosts of some kind so there is clearly more here than it seems. Obviously, I am interested. Also, to anyone annoyed at how the goofy theme takes a giant steaming dump on the Double Dragon legacy? Remember: It has seen FAR worse. Shoot, Technos themselves made a (surprisingly good?) fighting game based on the hilariously awful Double Dragon movie so they’re clearly more than willing to roll with some silly.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (PS3, 360)

I’m a little concerned due to the incredibly sparse release of Soul Calibur V but I intend to give this game a chance. The point is: More Tekken. Hopefully now with decent netcode. Also hopefully with more responsive controls but I am *not* counting on that.

Kirby’s Dream Collection (Wii)

When Nintendo merely re-released Super Mario All-Stars on disc on the Wii, it was disappointing to say the least. This, however, looks to be quite the legit collection containing a large number of Kirby games. This much Kirby in one place? Well shoot, I’ll bite. I didn’t really play enough of those games.

Borderlands 2 (360, PS3)

Currently 2K’s most preordered game ever and with good reason: Borderlands was something different. It took the FPS gameplay that everyone loves but has been run into the ground and merges it with loot grabbing, quest taking, multiplayer co-op dungeon crawling. The promise of even more has many people very excited. Me? I wish they had added more classes right out of the gate, but the promise of the upcoming Techromancer (Hey! That’s my favorite Dreamcast game!) class tells me there will be more classes to come, and that’s important.
Jet Set Radio HD (XBLA, PSN)

Yet another Dreamcast classic sees a downloadable port. Do I even need to tell you anything about the roller blading, spray painting awesomeness that is Jet Set Radio? I will tell you that SEGA promises 99% of the soundtrack will be returning so don’t you dare complain!

La-Mulana (Wii Ware)

So…La Mulana is coming to Wii apparently. It’s a big ‘ol super crazy challenging Metroidvania thing.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors (PS3)

Dynasty Warriors with One Piece characters? Well it’s not something I would have thought of, but I do like both Dynasty Warriors and One Piece. PS3 exclusive apparently.

Tokyo Jungle (PS3)

Basically “Life After People: The Game”. Play as a variety of animals and try to survive in a slowly overgrown Tokyo. Intriguing to say the least and it lets small dogs fight dinosaurs. Awesome.
Marvel vs Capcom Origins (XBLA, PSN)

Hey! Remember Marvel Super Heroes and MvC1? I know at least one of my friends likes those games better than MvC2 so good news for him as they’re coming to XBLA and PSN with online play!
Dead or Alive 5 (PS3, 360)

I gotta be honest, I am very concerned about this game. From unusual character redesign choices to the lackluster nature of Ninja Gaiden 3 to Lisa’s excessively pale skintone, I am very worried about DOA5. However, curiosity will not let me pass this one up. As someone who has been playing DOA since 2 I have to know what happens next. Will this game just be DOA2 with slightly faster gameplay and tweaked graphics or did they really overhaul the engine? Are these engine changes good or bad? How many people will actually claim that the smaller breasts result in better gameplay? And how much will idiots in the Fighting Game Community needlessly bash or drool over the game? Shoot I might have to review this dumb thing.

Thundercats (DS)

Know that awesome Thundercats reboot on Cartoon Network? Well while the show may not be getting a second season (we’re currently unsure), it *is* getting a side scrolling 2D action game on DS! Sweet! Alright it’ll probably be really simplistic and unimpressive but I don’t care. I wanna play this.
