New Releases – August 2013

August 28, 2013

Egad it has been awhile since I’ve posted a new release list this late and at quite the unfortuitous time as the releases are picking up quick for Christmas! Most noteable was freaking Dragon’s Crown and Tales of Xillia on the same day! Egad! Well let’s take a look at what came out, eh?

08/06
    Dragon’s Crown (PS3, Vita)

Everyone’s favorite controversy magnet/dream game is here and it is glorious! I can see how some might not like it for being seemingly basic, but it isn’t so much what it is but how it does it that makes it great! Dragon’s Crown takes the dungeon crawl/brawler genre and refines the execution brilliantly to retain challenge while not being aggrivating! No waiting around for people to finish up in town online, no fighting over loot, no waiting for a full game to start, ect. In terms of story it’s a bit sparse, but in terms of gameplay? This is Vanillaware’s finest.
    Tales of Xillia (PS3)

It’s more Tales Of! Now with an awesome female lead! Woohoo! Umm…I don’t have much here. I still prefer 2D Tales to 3D tales but this is nice. I also kinda miss world maps. Oh and the realtime cutscenes look a bit wonky and dated as they’re amusingly new to the series. Still a good time to be had and recommended to JRPG fans.

DuckTales Remastered (PSN, WiiU, PC (XBox Later))

Duck Tales is here and it’s pretty darn glorious! The way it blends the TV Show into the game is kinda neat! I can see how it might annoy some as it was easy to separate the brilliant game from the kinda silly cartoon when playing it on NES, but now they’re intrinsically linked. Either way, it’s neat. Too bad Microsoft shot themselves in the foot here! Yup, the 360 release was delayed until September 11th. Why? Well I’m gonna assume Summer of Arcade. Since it’s not exclusive it’s not part of the Summer of Arcade and thus gets delayed. Oh Microsoft you incompetent idiots…
    Rune Factory 4 (3DS)

New Rune Factory! Umm…I forgot about this. Should look into that.

08/14
    Charlie Murder (XBLA)

Some kind of side scroller based on a band? Haven’t looked into it much yet but I’m curious enough.

08/18
Disney Infinity (360, PS3, WiiU, PC, Wii)

The much hyped “Disney’s Skylanders mixed with Little Big Planet” that was promised to change how kids play videogames…and…it’s disappointing as heck! Seriously, overpriced, over restrictive, does NOT justify the existance of the figures, unoptimized and the PS3 version is completely busted. $100 million well spent, huh Disney? Oh and while we’re at it, where’s the Disney?! This is more Pixar Infinity featuring Johnny Depp! Heck it’s not even infinite! This game is VERY restrictive! So this may well be the least truthful title since Rock of the Dead (a game where you don’t play music and you fight aliens).

08/20
    Divekick (PSN, PC)

Remember when I described fighters as all boiling down to Samurai Kirby? Well this is a more accurate rendition of that. Whoever lands a divekick first wins. The fact that this is being celebrated is…kinda sad. I have a hard time justifying the $10 pricetag (I’d totally try it for $5) and it exemplifies why I prefer DOA5 to most fighters.
Saints Row IV (360, PS3, PC)

The DLC turned full game is quite the buggy mess. However in spite of basically being “Saints Row the Third but buggier” it is weirdly more enjoyable. I just…can’t hate this game! It’s not Saints Row 2, but it’s weirdly better than 3. The writing, the gameplay, it’s all very fun still. I just hope we get another Saints Row that can compare to 2 sometime. Maybe next gen, eh?

08/25
    New Super Luigi U (WiiU)

A boxed release for NSMBU’s Luigi-based spin-off. I’m kinda interested in this both for the novelty of owning it boxed…and the fact that I have no space on my WiiU since every game has a 300MB patch.

08/27
Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn (PS3, PC)

The complete retooling of FFXIV is here! I…will wait and see what the deal is.
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F (PS3)

Hatsune Miku is also here! Yeah I…got nothing. Forgot to grab this.
    Killer Is Dead (360, PS3)

SUDA51’s newest game is exactly what it says on the tin: Killer 7’s atmosphere and weird artesy WTF-ness mixed with No More Heroes’s gameplay. Get it? Killer Is Dead? No More Heroes? Killer 7? It all works.

08/29
    Pokemon Rumble U (WiiU)

“Gee I wonder when Nintendo will jump on the Skylanders bandwagon?” how about right now. Yes they actually did build a Skylanders portal of their own into the WiiU controller. Only sad thing is…wasn’t this released on Wii and 3DS without needing figures? Is it that enhanced? Do the figures add anything? How much do they cost? All will be revealed in time I guess.
