New Releases: June 2010

Hey! It’s that time again, the one time you can guarantee I’ll post: the beginning of the month for new releases! This month is pretty quiet but the few releases we do have are big ones. Transformers, Sin & Punishment, and…out of nowhere…a new River City game! So…let’s take a look!

Week 1

Alpha Protocol (360/PS3)

Described early on as “Mass Effect except with spies”. Chances are I’ll hate it due to my dislike of stealth and I haven’t heard anything about a custom character yet (though hopefully I’m wrong). Still, practically being held at gunpoint to pick this up for a friend, so we’ll see.

Week 2

Cue the tumbleweeds people, we got nothin’!

Week 3

Legend of Kay (DS)

Deja Vu? Hardly. Yup, Legend of Kay’s DS release got pushed back once again. But at least now we have actual screenshots of the DS release instead of the PS2 one. It, obviously, looks a lot worse but it might still be good.
River City Soccer Hooligans (DS)

*spittake* What?! A new River City game coming out of nowhere!? As you may be well aware, the River City series is known as the Kunio-kun series in Japan and features a number of sports game spin-offs. Each one adds super moves and the unnecessary roughness of the beat ’em ups to the sport at hand and the end result is something far more fun than the average sports game. Basically it’s like an ancient predecessor to the Mario Sports series (except sometimes better!).  The basketball game on the Famicom was even better than Super Dodgeball, so that should give you some idea of what we may see. Anyway, River City Soccer Hooligans features 3D models for the first time in the series history. Will this be a strength or it’s greatest weakness? Only time will tell but I know I’m excited! Definitely keep an eye on this one.

Week 4

Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3)

Being hailed as “the next Arkham Asylum”, War for Cybertron is a Transformers game that breaks free of the movie mold and delivers something closer to the Gen 1 experience, acting as a prequel to the Transformers series chronicling the war that took place on Cybertron before the Transformers came to Earth. The game shows infinite amounts of promise with it’s supposedly co-op campaign and custom characters in multiplayer.

However, I must admit, I am a little sad because thanks to this no one is gonna give Revenge of the Fallen a chance. I regret not doing my review of it but basically while the single player was lackluster, the multiplayer was heavenly! We’re talking Halo killing, Gears of War raping, “fuck you Modern Warfare!”, “Best damn third person shooter I have ever played!”, levels of good! The amount of things you could do in it were amazing. Sadly, War for Cybertron is being handled by a different developer and while it definitely looks good, their combat seems much more generic than what Revenge of the Fallen delivered. But, we shall see.

Transformers: Cybertron Adventures (Wii)

Once again, the Wii (and DS) releases are completely different from the 360/PS3 ones. This could either be bad or good! What “Cybertron Adventures” has in store for us, I am not sure. However, I will definately be giving it a rent.
Dragon Ball: Origins 2 (DS)

A game based on the original Dragon Ball series and the sequel to the original. Hopefully it won’t be all touch-screen controls as I heard the original was. See the picture though? That’s why I’m interested: playable Bulma. Yeah, remember when those characters actually did something?

Week 5

XG Blast! (DS)

Some kind of Geometry Wars clone for DS. I might look into it.
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (Wii)

Here it is, one of the best upcoming games on Wii. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is an on-rails shooter and sequel to the original N64 game (avalible on Virtual Contsole). Considering chase-view rail shooters are my favorite genre, I am pumped about this! You can probably guess the control scheme: move with the nunchuck analog stick, shoot with the Wiimote. It’s a control scheme that will work well for the game. Also, like the original,  it’s made by Treasure. As such, if I catch you bootlegging this I am going to hunt you down and flay the skin from your bones! No, seriously. I am starting to think that the lack of “hardcore” game sales on Wii is because all of the so-called “hardcore” gamers bootleg all their games. Now, Treasure is widely hailed as one of the greatest game companies in the world, but they don’t make a lot of money. If you don’t buy this, there’s actually a good chance they will go out of business. Don’t give me that “I’m just testing it” crap either. I already saw hundreds of people bootleg the fantastic Gunstar Super Heroes back when it came out “to test it” then declare it “not good enough” due to the lack of an overpowered sliding kick and thus not buy it, causing one of the GBA’s best games to bomb. Don’t do this again. If this game bombs and Treasure goes out of business, I am holding all of you responsible!

A side scrolling bullet hell shooter from Cave featuring gothic lolita character designs. Initially I didn’t care until I saw screenshots showing it to be oddly Cotton-esque. I do love me some Cotton so I care now.

Trinity Universe (PS3)

Nippon Ichi learns what a polygon is as they cross-over Disgaea with Gust’s Atelier series for a 3D RPG adventure. Look, I love sprites as much as the next guy but when you’re releasing full priced PS3 games well…yeah. It’s a bit odd. So it’s nice to see them pull off some nice looking polygonal models finally even if they do look a generation too late. Regardless it’s a colorful looking and probably lighthearted RPG so I’m in.
